MineCraft Server Getting Started Guide

So you just bought a new MineCraft Server but you are unsure how to use it? Read our MineCraft Getting Started Guide to learn everything you need to know to get started.

Let's First get you oriented with our Control Panels.
Here at End of Reality we offer two different control panels with our MineCraft Servers, TCAdmin and McMyAdmin. Both are very useful panels and have been exclusively combined at End of Reality for the best possible management over your new MineCraft Server. TCAdmin is our core Panel. This panel is launching the entire server process (which at End of Reality includes McMyAdmin). TCAdmin offers features such as a File Manager, Sub users (to allow fellow community members limited management access), and many other useful features. Now many providers stop at that, however TCAdmin is certainly not designed with MineCraft in mind and has many weaknesses such as its ability to properly shut down Minecraft servers, and properly query the server to name a few. McMyAdmin is our second custom integrated Panel for MineCraft servers only. This panel excels where TCAdmin comes up short in MineCraft server management, namely the interaction and query part. McMyAdmin offers features such as Interactive console, graceful stop/restart, Backup/Restore functions, Scheduler (backups etc), server user/group manager etc. McMyAdmin does not however include a built in File Manager which is where our custom integration with TCAdmin comes in handy.

Next let's cover the basic MineCraft server Configuration File.
The MineCraft server uses a file named server.properties to define specific settings for the server. An example of some of the settings defined by the file are whether to spawn animals or monsters, player-vs-player enabling or not, max amount of players etc. This file can very easily be edited by clicking Default Config Files in TCAdmin and then Config Editor. Many of the more frequently changed settings can be easily accessible and edited through McMyAdmin as well. You may notice that you can set the amount of players to any number you wish, however keep in mind that the amount of RAM you have purchased directly affects this, feel free to ask any member of our Support Team for guidance in this matter.

Next you are probably going to want to install plugins Right?
The main plugin Addon for MineCraft Servers is the CraftBukkit modification. This can easily be installed through the McMyAdmin panel under the About tab, Updates, and then simply click the Install/Update CraftBukkit. Next we recommend http://forums.bukkit.org for finding plugins. It is always useful to read other users comments, in case of problems or questions. Please note that different plugins may not work together, and the forum post will often cover any additional required plugins necessary for proper function.

Now we all know Updates are a common part of gaming, So how do you update your Server?
Being in the Beta stages still we tend to see fairly frequent MineCraft Server updates followed by CraftBukkit Updates. Luckily we make it simply to update, location in McMyAdmin you will find the update options in the About tab. If you get a message about Outdated server when trying to connect, you may have to update your server. Please do note though that updates may break plugins and if that does occur head to the Bukkit Forums first to see if there is a newer release, and then feel free to contact our Support Team for further assistance.

Now in case we did not cover some of your questions above simply, here are a few additional friendly reminders.
- Do not build in the spawn area, as this can cause unnecessary lag.
- Be careful not explore too much of your world, if not needed as this will increase RAM usage
- If you need to delete any files, you need to stop your server via McMyAdmin first.
- Do not add multiple plugins at the same time, add them one by one to verify that you do not get any errors.

In case we did not answer a question you have about your new MineCraft server simply open a support ticket and our Support Team will be more than happy to assist you.
